About Your Tooth
At Greene Endodonics, we believe that people should have their own teeth for an entire lifetime. To support that belief, not only provide a range of endodontic services but also believe in the importance of patient’s understanding of surgical and non-surgical endodontic therapy.
Your tooth consists of two main parts; the crown and the root. The crown is above the gum and is visible in your mouth. The root is the part of the tooth that lies beneath the gum and is surround by bone. Inside each root is a channel that contains the pulp which is nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue. This is commonly referred to as the “nerve” of the tooth. The pulp may be damaged by bacteria associated wit decay, fractures, trauma or disease.
In order to preserve a tooth that is damaged in this way, it is necessary to remove the diseased pulp tissue. This procedure is known a endodontic therapy. The root will continue to function normally even after removing the pulp form the root canal because the supporting tissue still remains intact. It is advisable to remove the injured pulp because it may become infected or cause complications to the tissues surrounding the tooth.
